Our customers are continually developing innovative therapies to treat a multitude of chronic illnesses. Particularly in the area of cardiovascular ailments, peptide-based therapies have seen considerable success with a number of promising indications. We recently partnered with Capstone Therapeutics to help the company develop novel therapies based on Capstone's thrombin peptide, Chrysalin (TP508 or rusalatide acetate). It is a novel synthetic 23-amino acid peptide that has been proven in multiple pre-clinical and clinical models to minimize cardiovascular tissue damage by initiating a series of anti-apoptotic events.
Drugs based on the Chrysalin peptide can be used to mimic the tissue repair aspect of thrombin activity without stimulating the events associated with blood clotting. Therefore, it has the potential to accelerate the natural cascade of healing events in a wide range of tissue injuries. Based on this ability, initial development efforts with Chrysalin were focused on speeding the healing process for bone fractures.
The eventual goal for Capstone is to develop Chrysalin into a therapy that limits the damage to heart muscle caused by a heart attack, increasing the chance of surviving the initial attack as well as protecting cardiac function over time. If successful, this approach will represent a significant clinical advance in the treatment of this life-threatening condition.
