Protecting Group

Also called side-chain protection · Fmoc · Boc

A protecting group is a temporary chemical modification applied to a reactive functional group to prevent it from reacting during synthesis steps it is not intended for. In SPPS, side-chain protecting groups shield amino acid residues during chain elongation; they are removed en masse at final cleavage. Incomplete deprotection leaves impurities.
