A randomized controlled trial (RCT) assigns participants by chance to treatment or control groups, controlling for confounders and enabling causal inferences about efficacy. Phase 3 trials are typically large, multicenter RCTs. The STEP, SURMOUNT, and SURPASS series for GLP-1 agonists are examples of large Phase 3 RCTs.
