AMPK

Also called AMP-activated protein kinase · AMP kinase

AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) is an enzyme that acts as a master energy sensor, activated when cellular AMP:ATP ratio rises (indicating low energy). It promotes catabolic pathways (fatty-acid oxidation, glucose uptake) and suppresses anabolic ones. MOTS-c, the mitochondrially-encoded peptide, is proposed to activate AMPK as part of its signaling mechanism.
